{"id":4363,"date":"2020-06-25T15:56:24","date_gmt":"2020-06-25T20:56:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.kraftgrp.com\/?p=4363"},"modified":"2020-07-22T17:49:08","modified_gmt":"2020-07-22T22:49:08","slug":"louisiana-legislation-msp-registration","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.kraftgrp.com\/louisiana-legislation-msp-registration\/","title":{"rendered":"New Louisiana Legislation Launches MSP Registration"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Louisiana Legislation Signs Louisiana Act 117 &#8211; Senate Bill 273, Requiring MSP Registration<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/legiscan.com\/LA\/text\/SB273\/2020\">Louisiana Act 117 \u2013 Senate Bill 273<\/a> was recently signed into law, and requires MSPs that manage infrastructure or end-user systems for \u201cpublic bodies\u201d to register with the state. This bill further builds on extant breach notification laws as well, requiring MSPs to disclose cyber incidents (including ransomware payments) to the state, putting the onus on them instead of the victim business.<\/p>\n<p>This bill was undoubtedly brought about for two key reasons:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The ongoing series of cybercrime attacks that have targeted businesses across the country, including public bodies like local governments. In July of last year, four Louisiana <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cpomagazine.com\/cyber-security\/louisiana-hit-with-another-ryuk-ransomware-attack\/\">school districts were hit with ransomware<\/a>; in November, Louisiana\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/arstechnica.com\/information-technology\/2019\/11\/hackers-paradise-louisianas-ransomware-disaster-far-from-over\/\">DMV offices were taken offline<\/a> in another ransomware attack. The bottom line is that if an MSP were responsible for these organization\u2019s cybersecurity defenses, this new legislation would have that info tracked through registration, and the details of the event logged through disclosure.<\/li>\n<li>The MSP market is enormous, and it\u2019s still growing &#8211; IT budgets have grown in recent years, with<a href=\"https:\/\/www.spiceworks.com\/marketing\/state-of-it\/report\/\"> 44% of businesses planning to increase<\/a> IT spending in 2020, up from 38% in 2019. Furthermore, the global<a href=\"https:\/\/www.marketwatch.com\/press-release\/managed-services-market-2019-global-industry-trends-share-growth-insight-size-competitive-analysis-statistics-regional-and-global-forecast-to-2024-2019-05-22\"> managed services market is expected to double<\/a> over the course of 2017-2023, from USD 155.91 billion to USD 296.38. The result is that there are so many MSPs operating in the US, all with varying degrees of capabilities &#8211; registration will help further legitimize the sector (while not technically regulating it, yet).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>What Does This Legislation Mean For MSPs And Their Clients?<\/h3>\n<p>Even if you\u2019re not operating in Louisiana, MSPs and their clients need to see the writing on the wall &#8211; this type of legislation is likely to show up in other states too. It suggests that MSPs need to step up and offer a high quality of service, and clients need to seek it out &#8211; especially when it comes to cybersecurity.<\/p>\n<p>User awareness is a fundamental part of effective cybersecurity.
