Do you know how to keep your data off the market?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s no longer enough to hold a company at ransom for their own data &#8211; now, cybercriminals are publicly shaming them for failing to pay up by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/krebsonsecurity.com\/2020\/06\/revil-ransomware-gang-starts-auctioning-victim-data\/\">auctioning off their data<\/a> on the dark web.<\/p>\n<p>Infamous cybercriminal group REvil, which has been attacking companies since last year, has recently escalated their efforts to profit off of private data by holding dark web auctions. The group announced that they would sell data stolen from a Canadian agricultural production company that failed to pay the ransom.<\/p>\n<p>At a minimum deposit of $5000 in virtual currency, and a starting bid of $50,000, the auction\u2019s winner will get three databases and more than 22,000 files stolen from the agricultural company. This attempt to auction off stolen data suggests that cybercriminals aren\u2019t making as much as they\u2019re used to through conventional ransomware scams, <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.chainalysis.com\/reports\/ransomware-covid-19\">likely due to the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>On the other hand, this could be yet another tactic to pressure the victim into paying their ransom. REvil has, in the past, <a href=\"https:\/\/krebsonsecurity.com\/2019\/12\/ransomware-gangs-now-outing-victim-businesses-that-dont-pay-up\/\">publicly shamed businesses <\/a>that failed to pay the ransom for their stolen data.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe problem is a lot of victim companies just don\u2019t have the money [to pay ransom demands] right now,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/krebsonsecurity.com\/2020\/06\/revil-ransomware-gang-starts-auctioning-victim-data\/\">said Lawrence Abrams<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, editor of\u00a0 BleepingComputer. \u201cOthers have gotten the message about the need for good backups, and probably don\u2019t need to pay. But maybe if the victim is seeing their data being actively bid on, they may be more inclined to pay the ransom.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.kraftgrp.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/Revil-Ransomware.jpg\" alt=\"Revil Ransomware\" width=\"100%\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>Do You Know How To Keep Your Data Off The Auction Slate?<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Confirm that anti-malware and antivirus settings are deployed to automate all updates and to continually conduct system and device scans.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Access controls should be configured so that shared permissions for directories, files and networks are restricted. The default settings should be \u201cread-only\u201d access to essential files, with limited permissions for write access to critical files and directories.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Train your staff to ask themselves these key questions before opening an email:<\/span>&nbsp;\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Do I know the sender of this email?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Does it make sense that it was sent to me?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Can I verify that the attached link or PDF is safe?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Does the email threaten to close my accounts or cancel my cards if I don&#8217;t provide information?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is this email really from someone I trust or does it just <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">look<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> like someone I trust? What can I do to verify?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Does anything seem &#8220;off&#8221; about this email, its contents or sender? <\/span>&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you have a data backup solution, then it doesn\u2019t matter if your data has been encrypted.
